Gruffalo Discovery Land: Sensory-Friendly Review

If your child is a Julia Donaldson fan like mine and you’re looking for an autism-friendly day out in the Midlands, this blog is for you! We recently visited Twycross Zoo and are sharing our Gruffalo Discovery Land review, covering our experience and whether it’s a good fit for neurodiverse families.

My son is 6 years old and autistic – a little older than the typical toddler audience, but he’s deeply attached to the story and loves structured environments. Having visited Twycross Zoo before, the location felt familiar, which helped ease anxiety around the new experience.

What Is Gruffalo Discovery Land?

Gruffalo Discovery Land is an immersive, interactive trail based on The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. Set within Twycross Zoo in Leicestershire, it offers a sensory-rich adventure where children walk through the story and encounter:

  • Life-sized animatronic characters
  • Interactive buttons to trigger narration
  • Sensory play stations (touch, spin, press!)
  • A butterfly house, owl enclosures and even a goat petting area
  • A themed Gruffalo Ranger scavenger hunt
  • Meet-and-greets with the Gruffalo character

It’s included with the general zoo admission, and Twycross currently offers free entry for 12 months when you buy a full-priced day ticket.

You can pre-order your zoo tickets from the Twycross Zoo Official Website.

💡 Parent tip: The Gruffalo Land is immediately visible upon entering the zoo. If your child spots it before you’re ready to go in, prepare for some redirection strategies (speaking from experience!).

Is Gruffalo Discovery Land Autism-Friendly?

Our visit and Gruffalo Discovery Land review proved that the attraction has lots of natural benefits for autistic children but also a few areas where extra planning helps.

✅ What Worked Well:

  • Familiarity: The story structure was comforting and predictable.
  • Sensory variety: Touch points, movement, sound, and visuals were great for sensory-seeking kids.
  • Ambient music: Calming nature sounds and background music helped regulate the mood.
  • Scavenger hunt: The Gruffalo Ranger booklet added a sense of control and routine.

⚠️ What to Be Aware Of:

  • Some animatronics weren’t working. This really upset my son, who knows the story by heart. When the sound didn’t match the scene, he found it hard to move on.
  • Indoor animation scenes: These were slightly dark and louder than expected – noise-cancelling headphones helped. Some advanced signage that there would be film screens inside the building as my children ran through startled.
  • Character meet-and-greet: Wonderful for some children, but potentially overwhelming for others. Prepare your child ahead of time.

Planning an Autism-Friendly Visit to Twycross Zoo

To get the most from your visit:

🧭 Best Times to Visit:

  • Weekdays during term-time are much quieter.
  • We visited during lunchtime when others were eating, and the trail was less crowded.
  • Gruffalo Land remained open until 4.30pm during our visit, so afternoons could be a calmer choice too. You can check the latest Twycross Zoo opening times here.

🎟 Booking & Access:

  • Advance booking is recommended, especially during peak times.
  • Parking is £3, which can be pre-booked or paid for on arrival.
  • Twycross Zoo supports the Nimbus Access Card scheme. A 1+ companion rating is required to receive a free carer ticket. Read more about the Nimbus Access Card on the Twycross website.

🥪 Food & Snacks:

  • There is a Gruffalo Café on site, but if you child is a selective eater. Bringing safe, familiar snacks or a packed lunch is always a good choice.

Final Thoughts: My Gruffalo Discovery Land review

My final thoughts on my Gruffalo Discovery Land reivew, at Twycross Zoo is a beautifully immersive, interactive attraction for Julia Donaldson fans. For autistic and neurodivergent children, it offers real potential for joyful engagement – especially when combined with a thoughtful, sensory-aware plan.

There are lots of elements here that support autism-friendly family days out in the UK, and with a few tweaks (like a visual guide or sensory map), this could become a leading example of accessibility in a family attraction.

As Twycross Zoo doesn’t currently offer this, we created a small photo book made up of images from previous visits to help my son navigate what to expect for maximum enjoyment and reduced sensory meltdowns.

Would You Use a Visual Guide for the Gruffalo Land?

If you’d be interested in a printable visual guide, social story or sensory-friendly checklist for this experience, please let me know – I’d love to explore developing one if there’s enough interest.
