Packing for your Disney Cruise embarkation day can feel overwhelming especially if you’re travelling with SEN children. Here’s a list of Disney cruise embarkation essentials to pack in your day bag so you’re ready for magic (and mishaps) the moment you board.
We always stay in a nearby hotel the night before we set sail from Southampton, UK, which gives us the perfect chance to pack our embarkation day bag with intention (and a bit of chaos). Your main luggage is checked in at the port terminal and might not arrive at your stateroom until after dinner, so having a well-thought-out day bag is a lifesaver.
Whether it’s a spare pair of pants (trust me), medication, or ear defenders—here’s everything we’ve learned to bring after several magical (and occasionally messy) sailings.
Thinking about planning a Disney Cruise from Southampton and whether this is right for your family? Disney Cruise Embarkation Day Essentials: Don’t Board Without These!
When you check in your suitcases at the port, they disappear into the hands of the hardworking crew and magically reappear later outside your stateroom. You won’t get access to your cabin until around 1.30pm, and bags might not arrive until the early evening. Your embarkation bag is what keeps you prepared and panic-free in the meantime.
What type of embarkation bag should you bring? Well thats up to your preference. However, I much prefer a large deep backpack that I can chuck onto my bag, keeping my hands free to grab the kids as they try to elope or enjoy a complimentary help-yourself whippy ice cream cone.
The kids have loungefly bags which I fill with their favourite snacks, fidgets and a drink bottle. I find the weight of the bag helps ground my son when he is overwhelmed.
1. A Spare Outfit (or Two): A Disney Cruise Must-Have
Top of the list: a full change of clothes. Whether it’s spilled ice cream, an overexcited trip-and-tear moment, or a toileting mishap, you’ll be grateful for clean clothes (and extra pants!).
You might also want to pack your evening outfit here if you plan to change for dinner.
Top tip: Packing the spare outfits in a packing cube (I got mine from Amazon and they have lasted years), makes it easier to grab and go when your reaching into your embarkation day bag.
2. Pool Time Prep: Swimwear & Disney Cruise Embarkation Day Essentials

Some families like to head straight to the pool if they have an early boarding time—brilliant idea! It’s quieter before the ship fills up.
Plus the queues for the Disney Cruise Water Rides; Aqua Duck and Aqua Mouse can get quite long during the cruise, so if this is a priority for your family, embarkation day could be the perfect time to snag your first ride.
We also found port days were quieter times to ride, as most guests will leave the boat to explore the port location.
If an embarkation day swim is on your must-do list, don’t forget:
- Swimsuits
- Goggles
- Waterproof nappies (if needed)
- Pool shoes (these are amazing if you little ones loves the water, but doesn’t like the feel of the pool area floor)
Towels are provided on the pool deck, so no need to pack those.
3. Sun Protection and Comfort Items
If you’re heading to the deck right away, remember:
- Sunglasses
- Hats
- Suncream
I was going to suggest bringing a book… but let’s be real. If your kids are anything like mine, you’ll be too busy chasing them around to get through a single paragraph.
4. Chargers, Kindles, and Battery Packs
Meltdowns are real — and they don’t mix well with embarkation day excitement. If your child requires a device to help them stay regulated, be sure to pack:
- Phone charger
- Power bank or spare battery pack
- Any devices your kids use like iPads or Kindles (preloaded with downloaded games or shows)
There’s no Wi-Fi unless you purchase an onboard internet package, so don’t count on streaming. And don’t rely on your battery surviving the morning drive, hotel stay, or terminal waits. A dead iPad is not the magical start anyone wants.
5. Medication and Disney Cruise Embarkation Day Essential Documents
Pack all medication, sensory supports, and any important documentation. Keep them easily accessible in case they’re needed before stateroom access.
Some of the documentation that you will require on check in is as follows (this may vary depending on the destinations that you are travelling to)
Passports
Required for every guest, including children and infants.
Make sure it’s valid for at least 6 months beyond your sailing date (double-check based on destination).
Port Arrival Form
This is part of your online check-in process via the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App or website.
You’ll receive a port arrival time and barcode to present at check-in.
Disney Cruise Line Port Arrival QR Code / Boarding Pass
Downloaded from your Navigator App or printed.
This helps you get through the check-in process quickly.
Health Screening Forms (if applicable)
While not always required post-pandemic, Disney may request a health declaration or travel history depending on the cruise date/destination.
Proof of Special Needs or Accommodations (optional but recommended)
For families with neurodiverse children, bring any documentation for medical devices, medications, or requests for disability access/support. (We weren’t asked for this on our last cruise, but it is worth having)
Travel Insurance Documents
Not mandatory for everyone, but highly recommended. Some itineraries may require proof. It is always sensible to travel with print outs or photocopies.
Visa Documents
If you’re sailing to a country that requires a visa (e.g., some Caribbean or European stops), make sure to have your visa documentation ready.
Children’s Consent Letters (if applicable)
If one parent is travelling alone with a child, a letter of consent from the other parent may be requested by immigration authorities. (We weren’t asked for this but did bring a letter with us onboard)
6. Passport, Navigator App & Tech Bits
Keep your passports, boarding documents, and phones handy. I’d recommend downloading the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app while you’re still in the terminal, if you haven’t already—it helps you check your dining rotation, find character meets, and plan your day.
Wait, what is the Navigator App?

The Disney Cruise Line Navigator app is basically your pocket-sized cruise guide—essential from the moment you board. It shows your dining rotation, onboard activities, character meet times, and even lets you message other guests (great for keeping in touch with your family while one of you is chasing kids around the ship). It’s especially helpful if your child thrives on routine or visuals—you can check what’s happening and plan your day without any surprises.
Just make sure you download it before you sail, as the Wi-Fi isn’t the quickest once you’re onboard!
7. Disney Cruise Embarkation Day Essentials for SEN families
This is a biggie for us. Here’s what’s in our bag for our autistic son:
- Homemade Visual aids from around the ship
- A “now and next” board
- Sunflower lanyards
- “Autism” awareness badges for his backpack
These small things make a huge difference in helping him (and us!) feel more comfortable navigating the day.

8. Muster Drill Survival Kit
Before the ship sails, you’ll attend the Muster Drill—a safety briefing with loud alarms and crowds. For us, that means packing:
- Ear defenders
- Loops (inner ear plugs)
- Small distractions (stickers are our MVP!)
You’ll also want these handy for noisy parts of the day like lunch in Marceline Market or Cabanas—which, spoiler alert, can be a sensory overload.
Top tip: On our second sailing, we skipped the buffet and opted for the main dining room sit-down lunch instead—much calmer!
9. Autograph Book, Pen & Character Meet Prep
Character meet-and-greets start early—Captain Mickey is often out soon after boarding. If you’ve got an autograph collector in the family, make sure the autograph book and Sharpie pens (we like to use a different colour for each character) are packed and ready.
Use the Navigator app to plan your character meets and avoid unexpected queues.
10. Quiet Embarkation Day Spaces for Disney Cruises
Embarkation day can feel like a lot—especially in the atrium where families are cheered onboard (with microphones!). If this feels overwhelming:
- Move through to the quieter bars (yes, you can take kids in for a look around)
- Check out the theatres and cinemas—they’re often empty pre-show
- Pack fidget toys, chewy jewellery, or calming tools
When your stateroom is ready, a good calming activity that we like to do is decorate our stateroom door with Disney themed magnets and hang up our Fish Extender outside.
